A history of Eversdal Cellar – Home of Villa Maria

The Eversdal homestead and wine cellar in Durbanville are some of the oldest and most historic buildings in South Africa. The history of this property has been traced back to 1680, 28 years after Jan van Riebeeck landed in the Cape. In 1680, the ground on which the house and cellar was built was leased by the Dutch East India Company to a Vryburger named Evert. Eversdal was named after him. By the time Mr Jan Marais, whose trust is the current owner, bought the property, the original farmland had been sold off and he could only buy the house, cellar and outbuildings.



The house was originally built in Cape Dutch style in 1714, but subsequently part of the house burnt down (more than 100 years before the Marais family took over). It had been renovated in Victorian style, with a corrugated roof and veranda with wrought-iron scrolled pillars. In 1980, Mr Jan Marais started restoring the 300-year-old building which housed the cellar. In the process, many old utensils, buckets, wine barrels, farm implements and a wine press were found in and around the wine cellar. The original "koffieklip" and mud, which was used to build the house and wine cellar, can still be seen. (In bar area and passage to restrooms). The cellar still houses the original wine machinery, wine vat and underground cellars. Wine was still made in the cellar until ± 1973 when Mr Marais bought the property.



The story so far...

Peter and Maria welcome you to their new Family Restaurant Villa Maria and know that this is only the beginning of many great memories and friendships to come. Peter started as a restaurateur almost 40 years ago, in Pretoria with the well known and traditional Meet and Eat Steakhouse. It was just there where he developed a magic touch in the kitchen and never looked back. The next venture was the popular Coffee Junction in Tygervalley, where Peter and Maria ran a successful business for 10 years.

There they became popular for their great food, service and live entertainment. They would now like to invite all their new and existing customers to their latest venture Villa Maria and hope to bring the same culture, atmosphere and great food with their new and exciting new menu, with the same Chef's that has followed them since 1978 which has been part of their success.
